Reflex myoclonus in olivopontocerebellar atrophy.

The presence of reflex myoclonus in response to touching and pin-pricking the wrist or stretching the fingers and to photic stimulation was assessed in 24 patients with a presumed diagnosis of olivopontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA) and in 30 age matched control subjects. Reflex myoclonus to soma-esthetic stimulation was found in 23 patients and in none of the controls. Photic myoclonus was present...

Reticular reflex myoclonus: a physiological type of human post-hypoxic myoclonus.

A patient with post-hypoxic myoclonus, sensitive to therapy with 5-hydroxytryptophan and clonazepam, was subjected to detailed electrophysiological investigation. Brief generalised jerks followed the critical stimulus of muscle stretch. The electroencephalogram showed generalised spikes that were associated with, but not time locked to, the myoclonus. The cranial nerve nuclei were activated up...

A Dutch family with 'familial cortical tremor with epilepsy'. Clinical characteristics and exclusion of linkage to chromosome 8q23.3-q24.1.

OBJECTIVES To describe the clinical characteristics of a large Dutch family with cortical tremor with epilepsy (FCTE) and to test for genetic linkage of FCTE to chromosome 8q23.3-q24.1. BACKGROUND FCTE is an idiopathic generalised epilepsy of adult onset with autosomal dominant inheritance. It is characterised by kinesiogenic tremor and myoclonus of the limbs, generalised seizures, and electr...

Carotid brainstem reflex myoclonus after hypoxic brain damage.

A patient comatose after acute anoxia developed bilaterally synchronous, periodic myoclonic jerks most prominently in the bilateral upper limbs. Although the myoclonus seemed to occur spontaneously, electrophysiological studies showed that the myoclonic jerks correlated in timing and size with arterial pulses, and was suppressed by massage over the carotid sinus. It is proposed that the present...

Predominant cortical dysfunction in Guadeloupean parkinsonism.

Atypical parkinsonism is extremely frequent in Guadeloupe and may have an environmental cause. One-half of the patients with this tauopathy have dopa-resistant parkinsonism, tremor, subcortical dementia and abnormal eye movements suggestive of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). They also have hallucinations, dysautonomia, which are not characteristic of PSP. Furthermore, the oculomotor abnor...
